Aladdin serves printers on the Eastern Seaboard from a modern 22,000 square foot New York City plant - alongside the Lincoln Tunnel - with quick and easy access to all major highways. Aladdin offers the three most popular post-press finishes - film lamination, UV-coating and aqueous coating. Each adds their own degree of protection, but what should be used depends on the needs of the customer.
LAMINATING - applying a layer of plastic film to one or two sides of a printed sheet.
Polypropylene (OPP) is the most widely used film laminating material in the world. Its physical properties make it easy to work with in a variety of applications. OPP provides a high degree of gloss and excellent clarity.
Polyester (sometimes referred to as "Mylar, which is a trade name of DuPont) is another popular choice. Polyester (PET) is somewhat more durable and scuff resistant than polypropylene so it's often the choice when ultimate in protection is required. This added durability tranlates into a higher price for PET over OPP.
Nylon, a relatively new addition to the family of available film substrates, is the basis for NON-CURLING film lamination products. Ideal for perfect bound covers or other applications where curl can not be tolerated, the "memory" of nylon film simply doesn't allow curl to occur, even in the most humid environments.
UV COATING - The "UV" standing for UltraViolet light, which is the radiation used to cure or harden this type of liquid plastic coating) has become the finish of choice for many applications - from book covers and jackets to box wraps. It is the ultimate in high-gloss coating that can be applied by roller, blanket or screen press. Spot UV coating can be applied to "jazz up" certain areas of a printed piece that has already been matte film laminated.
AQUEOUS COATING (Water-Based)is a high-gloss coating that can be applied either in-line or off-line. While not as high gloss as UV coating, it is being utilized on printing presses as a primer and off-line as a top coat.
